  • The most exciting Natural/Organic Pool in the world - how it works

Mountain Beach, Gaschurn, Austria is probably the largest organic/natural pool in the world, if not the most exciting. David Pagan Butler was invited to take a look and show how this pool works. Without the use of chemical disinfectants this pool can accommodate over a thousand visitors a day. The water quality is so high it is recommended by doctors. Heinrich Sandrell, the former Burgermeister, was the powerhouse behind the project and the pool was constructed by Biotop, Austria. It has two pools on different levels connected with a stream you can raft down. An Alpine summertime water wonderland. • Organic farming in the EU

Today, organic farming plays an increasingly bigger role on the world’s agricultural stage. In the European Union, the use of organic agricultural land has almost doubled in recent years. Austria, the Czech Republic and Estonia have the highest proportion of organically farmed land in Europe. EU citizens are also increasing their demand for organic products. Europe is the second largest market in the world, worth €22.7 billion. Germans, French and British are the biggest consumers. Organic farming is often seen as a solution to feeding a growing global population and reducing the environmental impact of agriculture. Critics, however, suggest that organic yields are on average 20 to 25% lower than those of conventional farms. More land to produce the same amount of food is needed, re...

The European Commission, the European Parliament, and EU member states are currently discussing how to regulate the organic farming sector. The outcome of the negotiations will be crucial for its future. Sources: Eurostat, FIBL-IFOAM, European Union (Organic Monitor).

His apple juices for example can be purchased all year round and are sold in cooperation with supermarkets and food-cooperatives. Filipp points out that most farmers only get information about chemical pesticides and therefore avoid trying new things. He thus claims for more funds for organic agriculture, and especially for innovative, alternative projects which promote biological diversity, productive livestock and mixed crops. «The advantage of organic cultivation methods is that we are able to resign from synthetic fertilizer, which means that the tremendous energy consumption and input of fossil fuels needed for their production is left out. Here, we exclusively work with natural means and soil revegetation to assure the nutrient supply of our plants.»
